BUNDJALUNG / KUNWINJKU
CROSS-CULTURAL PROJECT

- Byron Bay 2017 / 2020 -

Together with Kylie Caldwell; a local Bundjalung artist, I organised a cross cultural project. We brought the Kunwinjku women from Injalak Arts (Arnhem Land, NT) to my home on Bundjalung country in Northern NSW. This cross-cultural project was with the Wake-Up Time Women - a local group of Indigenous women weavers.

The project was funded by the Regional Arts Fund NT & NSW and over the two week project, the women shared culture, local materials, natural dye colours, arts skills and practices.

Gaining wide media coverage, the project was extremely successful and culminated in an exhibition at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery.

The Kunwinjku women returned in 2020 to run another weaving workshop for local northern NSW women and reconnect with the Wake up time women- and try and catch a goana! I feel privelaged to have these women in my life and ongoing relationships.

acknowledgment

I acknowledge the beautiful Bundjalung people of the country I live and work.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of all the places and communities in which I work. I pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

My work celebrates the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities, who also work and live on this land.

Permission and consent has been sort for all photographs and content on this website that depict Indigenous Australians and their artwork.

I acknowledge my white privilege and I am mindful of the white colonial lens, in which I was raised.

I strive to understand and work in ways that are culturally sensitive and address 'white blindness'.
I am deeply grateful for my opportunities to work, learn and form relationships with Indigenous artists.
